Why Sausage Tree Safari Camp?
The story behind our name
Look around our camp and you’ll soon understand where our name comes from.
Sausage Trees (Kigelia Africana) are dotted throughout our camp, their beautiful spreading canopies and distinctive fruits forming part of the landscape we are so fortunate to call home.
The Sausage Tree is one of Africa’s most recognisable trees, named for its remarkable fruits which hang from long, rope-like stalks and can grow to 60cm in length. But it’s perhaps at night that the tree is most spectacular. Its large, blood-red, nectar-rich flowers open after sunset, releasing a distinctive fragrance that attracts their nocturnal pollinators, particularly bats.
This tree has played an important role in the lives and traditions of people across Africa. Its fruits, bark and wood have been used in traditional and medicinal practices for generations.
For us, though, the Sausage Tree means something rather simpler. These magnificent trees are part of our home. They shade our camp, attract bats and birds and change beautifully with the seasons.
So when it came to naming our safari camp, there really was only one choice…
