A safari at Sausage Tree is small on purpose — ten adults in camp at most, twelve with children, so the days shape around you rather than a schedule. From dawn and afternoon game drives across the Olifants West Nature Reserve to bush walks on foot, sound safaris and Lowveld day tours beyond the reserve, these are the experiences you can build into your stay.

Game Drives
Twice daily — sunrise and late afternoon — open-vehicle drives with Themba leading the guiding team. Sundowner stops in the bush; the option of a night drive on request.

Bush Walks
Three-hour guided walks at the slower, closer-grained pace the bush rewards. FGASA-qualified guides; small groups; everything from track-reading to bird-calling.

Track & Sign
Learn the language of the bush — identifying animal tracks, scat and field signs with the Sausage Tree guiding team. After breakfast on the reserve.

Sound Safaris
An on-site listening experience in the Olifants West — directional microphones turn the bushveld up, and sounds you would normally walk straight past become the whole point. Intimate, small-group guiding at a deliberately slow pace. Minimum 2 guests, maximum 6.

Photographic Workshops

A half-day visit to the Jabulani elephant herd — a rescued family with a long history in the Lowveld. Qualified guide, entrance fees and air-conditioned transport included.

A half day at Nourish Eco Village or on the Sigagule village walking tour, with collection and return from camp by a qualified guide. A minimum of 20% of the tour cost is donated to Nourish Eco Village.

Sunrise lift-off over the Drakensberg foothills, an hour aloft, champagne breakfast on landing. Subject to weather and seasonal availability.

Helicopter Scenic Flights
Lift off from Hoedspruit and soar towards the Blyde River Canyon, one of the world's largest green canyons, with sweeping views of the Panorama Route and the Olifants River Gorge below. Options run from a 45-minute canyon flight to longer trips with a sparkling-wine landing, a picnic stop, or lunch at The Chubby Pig Eatery. Flown by Hope for Wildlife Helicopter Services from Hoedspruit Civil Airfield.

Activity FAQs
Twice-daily open-vehicle game drives across Olifants West Nature Reserve and camp-based activities (pool, boma dining, sky-deck) are all included in your stay. Bush walks and Track & Sign are optional extras — chargeable and subject to guide availability and weather. Off-site experiences (helicopter flights, Blyde Canyon tours, Daktari visits, Panoramic Route, spa treatments) are also chargeable — see the activity pricing page.
No — the daily rhythm is yours to set. If you'd rather skip a drive and stay in camp, the pool, sky-deck and boma are all yours; the team will let you know what time the vehicle leaves so you can choose in the moment.
Neutral colours (khaki, olive, brown) work best — avoid bright colours and strong perfume on walks. Layers are essential: chilly at dawn, warm by 09:00, cool again at sundown. Closed shoes for bush walks. We provide blankets and ponchos in the vehicles.
Under-6 guests do not join the camp's scheduled shared game drives — this is a safety and comfort call, and the guide's discretion applies. A private vehicle for a family with young children can be booked at an additional cost. Bush walks are usually 12+. Speak to us before booking and we'll tailor around your group.
Light rain is fine — the vehicles have ponchos and blankets, and wildlife is often more active in cool weather. Heavy rain or lightning is a call the guide makes on the day, safety-first. Cancelled drives or walks are made up where the schedule allows; nothing is charged if we cancel.
Game drives run to the camp schedule and are booked in on arrival. Bush walks, Track & Sign and spa treatments are optional extras — best flagged with reservations so the guide and therapist rotation can accommodate. Off-site experiences with fixed departure times (helicopter, Panoramic Route, Blyde Canyon, Daktari) benefit from a heads-up in your booking enquiry so we can secure the slot — the earlier we know, the better the odds.
Camp-based activities and the private-vehicle game drive option work well for families with under-6s. Daktari Tours (visits to the Bush School and orphanage) are a favourite with older children — educational, engaging and often the highlight. Bush walks are usually 12+ for safety.
