A Luxury Tented Safari Camp in Greater Kruger

Sausage Tree is a tented camp, and that word does a lot of work. The canvas walls don’t separate you from the bush the way brick does — they bring it close. You hear the night arrive. You wake to birdsong, not air-conditioning. And yet nothing about the comfort is roughing it: en-suite bathrooms, proper beds, a private viewing deck off every suite.

Five tented suites in two tiers — three Superior Safari Tents and two Luxury Tented Suites. Family-owned and run since 2012 by the Carne and van der Ploeg families. That’s the whole camp. It’s small on purpose.

What “tented” really means here

Each suite is a permanent, canvas-walled retreat with a private deck looking into the reserve, an en-suite bathroom, an outdoor shower under the open sky, comfortable beds, and the kind of quiet you only get when there are a handful of guests rather than a hundred. The canvas is the point: at night the bush is right there, a private soundtrack of distant calls.

The camp’s two tiers — three Superior Safari Tents and two Luxury Tented Suites — both put you right in the bush. The Luxury Tented Suites are larger, with a more elevated interior finish. Outdoor showers are universal across the camp; daily rhythm, game drives, meals, and what the bush around you is doing are the same regardless of which tier you book.

For peace of mind, the camp is enclosed by an anti-predator electric perimeter fence — so you have the closeness of the bush without the worry.

The intimacy of five tents

A five-tent camp changes the whole experience. Game drives are personal, not packed. Dinners are shared with a handful of guests, not a crowd. The team learns your name and your preferences within a day. And when you want the camp to yourselves — a family, a group of friends, a celebration — you can book it exclusively.

Tent 5 — the romance suite

Tent 5 is one of our two Luxury Tented Suites, set up for couples: premium bedding, a private deck looking out into the reserve, the outdoor shower under the open sky that every suite shares, and sunset views over the Drakensberg escarpment on the horizon.

Beyond the tent

  • A pool for the heat of the day
  • A sky deck for sundowners and private dinners
  • A waterhole that brings the wildlife to you
  • Boma dinners around the fire under the stars

The setting

The camp sits in Olifants West Nature Reserve — a private, unfenced part of Greater Kruger. The reserve is around 7,500 hectares of land area on its northern side, with traversing rights across roughly 4,000 hectares of Big 5 wilderness along the Olifants River.
